3 - Semiotics Print Ad, Outdoor Ad, Tv Ad


 Print Ad: DOG WHISPERER

In this print advertising the audience sees a bike, two golden retriever dogs, a dog water bowl, five Dalmatian puppies in a room. In the picture there is writing saying “Dogs have issues too” and the logo of National Geographic Channel. The connotation of this image is that dogs need help too because they have problems as well. They are just like humans. The myth that is put out is that Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer, helps dogs who have issues.

Signifier: puppies are different breed
Signified: cheating
Denotation: Bike, two Golden Retrievers, water bowl, five Dalmatian puppies, “Dogs have issues too”, “Dog whisperer with Cesar Milan”, “National Geographic Channel” logo
Connotation:  dogs need help/ problems need to be solved

 Billboard: MIELE

I chose a billboard ad as an outdoor commercial.  Part of a vacuum is printed on the billboard and then you can see an hot air balloon hanging over the billboard, looking like it got partially sucked in by the vacuum. Connotation is that the vacuum must be very effective and strong. The myth of this image is that Miele builds the strongest vacuums.

Signifier: Balloon sucked in by vacuum
Signified: Very strong Vacuum
Denotation: Part of vacuum “Miele”, hot air balloon hanging over billboard
Connotation: Vacuum is very strong

Myth: Miele is the best vacuum brand





 TV Ad: Android - Friends furever

The TV ad shows different kinds of animals playing together. There are cats and dogs, a bear and a tiger, a monkey and a dog, etc. In the end the sentence “Be together. not the same” pops up and then the Android logo pops up. The connotation of this commercial is everyone can be friends and get along no matter how different or what kind of animal/ person they are. The myth of the clip is that we should respect and be together with people no matter how different they are.

Signifier: Different animals being friends
Signified: You don’t have to be the same to get along
Denotation: Diff. types of animals together
Connotation: Everyone can be friends/ get along

Myth: We are all the same.

2 - Super bowl 2015

This is my third year in America and even if I have no interest in football at all, I am always excited for the Super bowl commercials. This year one commercial was very outstanding to me and I was somehow shocked and on the other hand very happy (if you can say so) to see it on TV and even during the Super Bowl. I am talking about the Domestic Violence PSA commercial.
The Super Bowl is one of the biggest event to force products and brands on people so I am glad PSA takes their chances and addresses one of the biggest problems in American households to their audience.
I can imagine living rooms and bars got quiet when this commercial was shown and it made people think. I hope the message "When it is hard to talk - it is up to us to listen" has reached many people.

A further ad I really enjoyed was the Fiat commercial for the new Fiat 500x. To me it was very original and since fiat is an italian brand I was very happy it took place in that little Italian village with the old italian man and all features people think of when they are confronted with Italy.
This commercial was simple and like I said original.

All in all, it is hard to pick favorites because every commercial has a different way to approach and a different message.

1 - Ad agency

BBDO is an ad agency I find very interesting and entertaining. Last summer, I was trying to complete an internship back home in Germany and I applied for a internship position at BBDO in Düsseldorf. Unfortunately,
Ever since, I am following their work and campaigns.
BBDO is a very large and successful advertising agency with offices across 81 countries.
Most of their campaigns are humorous and very entertaining. Furthermore, they have a large number of clients, for example VW, Bayer, Starbucks, etc.
